Woven Fabrics

The book was written with quilting cotton in mind, but I personally love mixing it up with other woven fabrics. There’s something comforting about running my hands on a quilt with different textures.

When I got my quilts back from the publisher, I knew I wanted make some new samples to showcase some of the projects. After all, I've been looking at the designs in the same colors for over a year. Enter the Sprout Wovens collection by Fableism:

I had this warm bundle in my stash for almost a year, so I thought it was the perfect time to cut these babies up. I decided to use woven fabrics exclusively for the following three projects to demonstrate that you can also use woven fabrics for the patterns in the book. The first project I decided to remake was the Mountain Minis. Because the book sample showcased a monochromatic scheme, I made sure to change it up , so I pulled these colors from the bundle:

from left to right: trellis sugar cube, autumnal, cider, marsala, wild rose

These wovens are yarn-dyed cottons, which have a different look and feel than regular quilting cottons. The looser-woven threads don’t hold seam rippers in high regard as much, so I took my time with cutting and sewing. These gorgeous earthy colors are worth it!

I don’t take a lot of progress shots - not only because it disrupts the flow, but also because this one pieced up quickly (despite working slower) - so I’m going to fast forward to the following afternoon, where I found myself a new wall hanging to put in my bedroom!

Not only did I score a new wall hanging for myself, I also whipped up a couple extra samples using some newly released Sprout Wovens colors:

top to bottom: mulberry, spicy, terracotta, rose clay, cherub, pan dulce

Woodland Mini

The Woodland Mini is a quick and versatile design that includes instructions on how to easily trim the project into a square pillow. For this sample, I used all the colors above, minus mulberry. I chose the same curvy quilt design from the original sample to mimic the curvy crown of the tree. I’m a sucker for curves and loved how fun it was to make this in one afternoon.

River Mini

The River Mini is another design I wanted to remake using the new colors. This time, I used mulberry and omitted pan dulce. I didn’t fully appreciate hand quilting until two years ago, but it’s now my go-to method for all of my small projects. For this sample, I didn’t plan on a particular quilt design. I just tackled each landscape feature one-by-one and slow stitched through random episodes of THR Roundtables online (I’m a casual movie buff).
