I’ve been living in California for almost 30 years and yet it was only in 2018 when my family and I drove up to the state’s Eastern Sierra for the first time and discovered the natural beauty surrounding the area. It was a glorious long weekend trip of hiking, boating, and exploring all the lakes around the town. In awe of the beautiful trees and the sparkling lakes, I took some photos during our hike — not knowing that in a year later, I’d be writing a pattern inspired by that adventure!

From the jump, I knew I wanted to include two designs - one with the sun setting and one with a full circle - simply because I could. not. decide. which one I liked better. So, if there’s ever any case in the argument for poor decision-making skills, consider this is as a great example. Forget this or that! Let’s just do both!

I’m a huge fan of sewing curves and I thought this would be a great introduction for those looking to dip their feet into making curvy blocks. After all, there’s only one celestial object to sew! If you’re still a bit intimidated with circle blocks, I’ve got your back. The written instructions are straightforward and accompanied with lots of visuals to guide you along the way. This was some of my testers’ first experience with circle blocks and I’m proud to tell you that they came out unscathed (and with beautiful quilt tops to boot)!

Pattern Tester Versions

Speaking of testers, I was fortunate to have some of the best makers out there willing to test my pattern once again. I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for their helpful notes, encouragement and suggestions during the testing. One of my favorite parts of writing a pattern is seeing other people’s interpretation of it so without further ado, let’s check them out!
