As much as I want to keep things neutral with my patterns, I just can’t. This remains *whispers* my favorite XOXSEW pattern because of how it happened (like a lightbulb!) and how it’s designed and pieced (so geometric and so…metropolis-y? I’ll try and come back for a better description). Though, it feels like years since Metropolis was released when, really, it’s only been six months, let’s go through this super delayed blog post together, shall we?

Colors used: Kona Peach, Orangeade, Cadet, Caribbean, Mac and Cheese, Punch, Desert Green

Metropolis is the third installment of the four-part Golden State pattern series. Having lived in Los Angeles for 30+ years, it was a no-brainer to include and design something for my city. I love the diversity, the foods, the museums, the close proximity to other California getaways, and all my childhood memories here. Truth be told, I was going to release a different pattern but when this design popped in my head, I was too excited to wait another few months to get it released. It had to be made ASAP!

With a mix of traditional building blocks to piece Metropolis, the pattern comes in 5 different sizes and like the rest of XOXSEW patterns, are pretty quick to make. So quick that I made several versions before its release! They’re great for prints, solids, bundles, you name it, it’s good for it!

Golden Hour Wall Hanging
This is the latest addition of all my Metropolis versions and it’s so gosh darn pretty that I made sure to pack it to our first ever trip since the pandemic began, despite not having an inch of room left in the car.

Art Gallery Fabrics Decostitch Elements
The prints of this blender fabric collection, courtesy of Art Gallery Fabrics, bring an added texture that’s the perfect amount of subtle.

FIGO Fabrics Charms
A dark sky with neutral colors was one of the first color combos I envisioned and the versatile Charms collection, courtesy of FIGO Fabrics, helped make it come to life!

Essex Linens
The look of linen on quilts is my favorite and these colors did not disappoint! This quilt got the longarm treatment over at the Prairie Folk Quilt Co. and I still have not gotten over the texture on this! Amanda is a talented longarm quilter and it took me months to bind this simply because my binding skills are terrible and I didn’t want to risk ruining it.

Colors used: Essex Metallic in Rose, RK Pink Clay, Charcoal, Shale, Earth, Cedar, and C+S Add it Up

Scrappy Wall Hanging
These colors were inspired by a fabric print from the Ampersand Studio and luckily, I had just the right amount of scraps in my stash to make a wall hanging version! It’s the only decor hanging in my bedroom and I love waking up to it every morning. I need to do some sleuthing to identify the colors so if you’re really interested, send me a message and I’ll dig deep into my scrap bin to hunt the colors down!

Clementine Pillow and Dew & Moss Wall Hanging
Prints are a DELIGHT to work with and the colors from both Melody Miller’s Clementine collection and Alexandra Bordallo’s Dew & Moss collection are no exception. These are entirely made of scraps, in case you missed how scrap-friendly this is lol.

Pattern Tester Versions

The original pattern release date was May 5th but if you remember the first few weeks of the pandemic, quilting fabric became scarce and with fabric manufacturers temporarily closing operations, the release date moved a month earlier to April 2nd. Luckily, my testers were quick to adapt to this jarring shift and they all delivered the most wonderful versions and so wholly different from each other! They’re a super talented bunch, most of whom I proudly consider my friends so please give them a follow on IG and give them some love!
