Inspired by my childhood days, Arcade is part of a series paying tribute to the important things in my life growing up so strap on your seat belts and let’s travel back in time!

I had the best time writing the Golden State series, which includes the Balboa Island, Mammoth Lakes, Metropolis, and Eastern Sierra quilt patterns, because it centered on a travel theme that touched on different sewing techniques. Writing and designing this collection was incredibly fulfilling, and in many ways, more so than sewing itself. Ssshh, don’t tell anyone.

As soon as the series wrapped up, I immediately wanted to capture that same fulfilling challenge again. With the pandemic in full swing and our household remaining isolated for months and months, it wasn’t a surprise when nostalgia seeped into my thoughts and thus, landed on designs inspired by the simpler times: childhood.

So here we are with the Wonder Years series. The four-part pattern collection features minimalist designs to reflect the simpler times.

Arcade is the first one up and it’s an important one for me because my childhood would not have been the same without video games. I grew up playing them with my brothers and is still one of my favorite hobbies. (I recently finished Luigi’s Mansion 3 and am anxiously waiting for BOTW 2 to release!). The design was inspired by Galaga and if you’re not familiar with the game, I tried to incorporate geometric lines to depict the swooping villains. I also added the tractor beam to fill out the remaining space. There are a couple of easter eggs in the design as a nod to one my other favorite video games and if you spot them, congrats! ;)

Design and Size Options

Best of all, the pattern comes with three size options (wall hanging, baby, throw) AND three designs: the regular option as seen in the above photos, the Inverted Beams design below, and the Space Blast design in the last version on the bottom. As with most XOXSEW patterns, it’s a quick weekend project, giving you plenty of time to do other important things, like playing video games. Of course.

Although the modern and geometric design is perfect for solids, fret not printed fabric lovers! Feel free to spice it up and use your prints! I used leftover prints from a previous project to whip up this wall hanging.
