This Way Home Quilt Pattern

We’re heading This Way Home for the final pattern of the Wonder Years series now available HERE!

After a trip to the Arcade with HRTs, playing outside until Sunset Bliss with curves, and going to the library for some quiet Story Hour with HSTs, This Way Home caps off the minimalist collection with flying geese!

INSIDE THE PATTERN

I’ve loaded this pattern with two piecing methods, nifty and NEW oversize flying geese trimming instructions, and a link to a quick video tutorial so you can build your houses with confidence!

PLUS! With four size options (wall hanging, baby, throw, and bed size) and a bonus scrappy option, there are so many possibilities to make This Way Home your very own. Eliminate a row to make it a square quilt, remove a house for an “empty lot” or mix-and-match the rooftops and the foundation for a fun neighborhood! Whatever you decide, your homes so your rules!

ABOUT THE PATTERN

The Wonder Years pattern series wouldn’t be complete without a home theme. This Way Home ties together the end of the series and of my childhood. One of the houses is different to signify home but I also included a scrappy option to depict moving from one place to another as a kid. Though it might be my simplest and most straightforward pattern, the meaning behind these houses are anything but.

I tend to sketch my designs as a way to process my thoughts and feelings so working on this one was a gut punch. There were plenty of times while growing up when I felt completely lost. There’s nothing like losing one’s sense of direction and feeling off-centered. What began as a sketch on This Side Up labels on fragile boxes turned into my literal and abstract meaning of home. Moving multiple times, a messy divorce, broken friendships, a new family, and transitioning into adolescence are all on this pattern. But so are my family, my kids, my husband, and what home truly means to me now. As much as I wanted to alter the simplicity of this design, it was important for me to keep the houses aligned so that whenever life turns upside down and things feel out of place - in this case, the quilt - I hope you can still see the shape of home, even if it’s just a silhouette.
