Adrift x RSS Starry 2025

Three weeks ago, I came across a post from Sarah Made about the new Starry colors coming out this summer and I instantly wanted to make one more quilt sample for the Adrift pattern (available May 6th!). I wasn't sure if I could make one in time for the pattern release but the stars aligned (the only pun in this post, I promise!) because the wonderful people at Ruby Star Society generously sent this lovely stack of pretties last week!

From top to bottom:

RS4109 91 Charcoal
RS4109 87 Galaxy
RS4109 85 Vintage Blue
RS4109 84 Soft Blue
RS4109 83 Polar
RS4109 68 Peach
RS4109 71 Rosebud
RS4109 72 Watermelon
RS4109 77 Heliotrope

There's just something about the Starry collection that magically enhances everything it touches. Maybe it's the color of the stars against the background, or how well the colors all go together, or how adorably wonky the stars are. Whatever its magical properties are, I'm always happy with the outcome. 🤩

My 12yo helped me choose the threads so I can quilt this baby by hand. Despite using thimbles and bandages, my fingertips were sore from hand quilting so I machine quilted the sky and the ocean areas instead. To emulate the winds, I went with gentle wavy stitches (it's also a fun and fast way to quilt a project!). For the ocean, I quilted echo lines to create a subtle movement below the surface.

My other Adrift samples all use the facing method because I love the borderless look on this design. For this final sample, I wanted to try the traditional binding method to create a similar look. I racked my brain on how to go about this, but it seemed too complex in my head so I ultimately decided to search it up online. Lo and behold, Andrea of 3rd Story Workshop has a wonderful tutorial on how to align your pieced binding to your quilt top!

Make sure to check back on May 6th when the Adrift pattern becomes available!
