QUICK LOOK

The Mountains quilt pattern is a bold and modern design that first appeared in my book, Modern Landscape Quilts. The pattern is packed with five different project sizes for the ultimate quilt adventure:

  • Wall Hanging 33” x 36”

  • Baby 44” x 48”

  • Throw 66” x 72”

  • Twin 66” x 90” (Lengthened version)

  • Bed 88” x 96”

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Below are the fabric requirements for each size. To let the design shine, solids - or a mix of solids and blenders - are recommended for best results.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

The original release date for Mountains was a few years ago and was intended to be the non-curvy sister pattern to Golden Canyon, that is, until the book opportunity landed right in the middle of those plans. While the book's theme takes you on a journey with scenic quilts, this baby had a quilt journey of her own. It kept getting pushed to a later date (my brain needed a little break from landscape quilts 😅) and the quilt size variety kept getting bigger and bigger. Needless to say, I'm ecstatic to finally have this pattern available at our shop — releasing exactly two years since the book came out!

SAMPLES

Since I already have samples from the book, I made the smaller sizes. Note: Fabric names are listed under the finished quilts (the final images).

Daylight and Sunrise

I made two wall hangings using a chunk of the colors from Suzy Quilts’ Signature PURE solids for AGF. When her solid collection came out, I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd use a bulk of it for this pattern. Some of the fabric colors matched the colors I'd see whenever I visited the eastern side of the Sierra mountains.

If you’re curious about the quilts, the top quilt is the cover sample of the Eastern Sierra quilt pattern. The bottom quilt is the Mountain project from the Modern Landscape Quilts book. It finishes at 55” x 60”, which is a size that can only be found in the book. Both quilts shown above were longarm quilted by Wild Phil Quilting.

After each quilt top was pieced, I figured this was the perfect time to break out the matching Aurifil thread. I supplemented the missing thread colors with DMC 928 and Ecru. Once again, I used leftover wool batting to make my quilting stitches pop. And also once again, I forgot to take more photos of the process, but here are a couple!:

There was a time when I wasn’t a fan of hand quilting or binding. These days, they’re what I look forward to the most. I just love getting lost in the process. The only quilt designs I had in mind were making geometric angles to reflect the ruggedness of the mountains and wavy lines to emphasize the breeze. I marked my stitches using a Hera marker and mostly freestyled the stitches for the sky. I didn’t even realize how curvy my wavy lines were in the Sunrise version (warm colors) until the very end.

To finish each quilt, I tend to lean on a borderless look so the facing method was used.
